While on a motorcycle trip to Sturgis, Dave
Udy picked up a piece of tire that had caught underneath his
motorcycle trailer. As he removed it fro mthe axle, the frayed
ends poked his hands and fingers. While he was bleeding all
over the ends, he noticed how much it looked like a bunch
of roses with the blood red ends. When he arrived home, he
created the first bouquet of "re-tread roses." The inspiration
for other flowers, trees, etc. etc. came later.
This is an "environmentally correct" art form. Flowers,
trees and other sculptures are made out of old, blown out,
tire scraps that are picked up off the freeway. For the flowers
the ends are dipped in a plastic coating material. For the
trees, they may be dipped, sprayed or painted with the same
material.
